Songs of Lalon and Mansour
A Voyage of the Ear, a musical and geographic dialog, in which the music of here and now meets the traditional culture of Bangladesh and the two commune in the same breath.
The Voyage of the Ear is a nonstop cruise, concert conducted in one uninterrupted set, with no breaks, or applause, or movement by the musicians between the works. An exploratory experience in which everyone, both on stage and in the audience, listens to the flow of time as it travels across a landscape of climates.
Voyage to Bangladesh, and hear the millennial culture of a new country, rooted in the fertile deltas of the Ganges and the Brahmaputra.
A meeting of Western soloists and Bangladeshi musicians, and a reciprocal listening between two sonic universes: the oral tradition of Farida Parveen, singing a structured song of ecstasy, perched on the Indian raga, on the verge of Sufi vertigo; and the contemporary writing of Laurent Cuniot, whose intensity of language is set afire by lyricism.
Hear the confrontation of a past world, the world of Lalon Shah, the mad fakir, the icon of old Bengal, said to have been 117 when he died in 1890, after inspiring the humanism of Rabindranath Tagore, and the contemporary poetry of Muhammad Mansur, in whose rich conceptual spaces the imagination of the composer is engulfed.
If the Voyage of the Ear blurs some boundaries, it also underlines that in rubbing up against otherness, we reveal its harmony and dissonance, and the deep singularity in each of the universes. Thus escaping the lukewarm fashions of fusion and cross-over.
