A tour under the California sun, to highlight the vital resonance between French and Angeleno creations.
The encounter with the other, the sharing of distances traversed, across time or generations, is at the heart of all TM+’s projects. Both in the local residency, and on international adventures.
For the first time, the Ensemble has been invited to participate in the Hear Now Festival in Los Angeles. On the famed campuses of UCLA and California State University, Angeleno composers will be selected after a call for projects. In exchange, two subtle pieces will represent the colors of the French repertoire: La Barque Mystique by Tristan Murail, and Les Traces, et Strettes, en Strates… en Strophes by Jean-Marc Singier.
TM+ will meet up with some of the festival regulars, such as Le Quatuor Lyris, and also the chamber ensemble Brightwork newmusic, who will be invited next season to the Maison de la Musique in Nanterre in a good-faith exchange of cultural practices, the kind which is so necessary to preserve in such troubled times.
Having torn up and thrown away the faded clichés, Hear Now invites us to listen to the here and now of West Coast music. Not drowning in the syrup of Hollywood, nor grinding the gears of a familiar formula. It all begins with the founder and artistic director of the festival, composer Hugh Levick, who was weaned on the cutting edge of Coltrane, with a modernity in the expressive lineage of Alban Berg.
